Practicing a skill can make it perfect but only if you are practicing it in the right way, every new skill you learn has to be used again and again to be able to get to a point where you excel in it.

There are very few people who are just naturally gifted, most of us instead need to practice things to get good at them.

When you’re learning to ride a bike you have to fall off a few times and hurt yourself and it can be a little painful until you get it right, usually we have someone helping us when we start out, showing us how to ride a bike in the right way.

When you’re learning to drive, it seems complicated and unnatural, you may even have a small bump or scrape of your car whilst learning and each of us has to be trained to drive, usually by a driving instructor or someone experienced showing us how to do it properly and safely.

If you start a new job unless you have a really intolerant boss, most employers understand that a new job can take time to learn properly until you become a productive member of the team and usually there is proper training in place to help you along the way, most places you work allow you time to learn and you get to work with a more experienced member of staff who shows you the ropes to ensure you’re getting it right.

So it makes sense that this should be the same with sales, but instead most people assume they will be able to set up a business, promote it and start converting clients straight away and that getting sales will be easy.

But when you’re inexperienced and new to selling and it can feel really uncomfortable when you start and getting it wrong can be costly and slow down your business progress.

I speak to so many people that have been practicing selling in their own way for years, they have been getting on call after call with no sales training and wondering why they can’t seem to convert them into clients, or why the potential client ghosts them after seeming so keen.

These people just didn’t realise how much they can improve their sales process and conversion rate until they had the right training.

When you are thinking about your business and all the skills you need, my advice is to put your sales skills near the top of your list, because without sales there really is no business, but make sure you have the skills to sell before you begin to practice selling.
